Believe it or not, the summer is a great time to look for a new fireplace. You can find good deals on a variety of different types of hearth heating appliances. Plus, once you find the best new fireplace for your home, you can go ahead and have it professionally installed so you will be sure to be ready for the first cool night of the fall. If you are looking to improve the energy efficiency in your home, you may want to consider a gas fireplace insert or a new set of gas logs. Both of these appliances will provide a lot of warmth without increasing your heating costs.
While you may think you can save money by installing gas logs or an insert yourself, only a professional technician should work with connecting the appliance to your gas line. You can trust Ashbusters to safely and properly install your gas fireplace appliance because our technicians are certified Gas Specialists by the National Fireplace Institute (NFI). We would like to tell you more about what our NFI certification means for you.
What is the National Fireplace Institute (NFI)?
Founded in 2002 as the professional certification division of the Hearth, Patio, and Barbecue Education Foundation (HPBEF), the NFI trains professional technicians how to plan and install residential hearth appliance and venting systems. Specialist certifications can be earned in three areas based on fuel type: gas, wood-burning, and pellet.
What does an NFI certification mean for me as a homeowner?
Not only is this certification an excellent indication of a technician’s professional training and commitment, but it also means the technician has passed a test that is based on the knowledge that is necessary to properly plan and install hearth appliances and their venting systems. This certification is especially important for public safety reasons. Since your fireplace and chimney system involves flames, heat, and the exhaust of smoke and combustion gases, you want to be sure that it is being planned and installed properly, and hiring a NFI-certified technician is a great way to guarantee the job is done safely and correctly.

How does a technician maintain his NFI certification?
After earning the specialist status, the certification is valid for three years. A specialist can retake the exam at the end of that validation period, or he can choose to participate in the NFI Continuing Education Program for Certification Renewal. This program consists of training programs that are accredited with NFI Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
