It’s a place where the pace is easy, the smiles are genuine, and the warmth of the community radiates like the golden glow of a Tennessee sunset.

This city, just south of Nashville, welcomes millions of visitors every year. From its historic charm to its vibrant cultural scene, Franklin offers many attractions that peak the interest of both the young and old alike.

If you’d like to dive into the history and the captivating stories that helped shape this remarkable place over the years, check out Carter House, Lotz House Museum, or Carnton. Whether it’s historic buildings or preserved artifacts that suit your fancy, each of these sites offers a unique glimpse into the past.

Arguably one of the coolest things about Franklin is its battleground sites at Fort Granger, Eastern Flank Battlefield Park, and Confederate Memorial Park at Winstead Hill. From the Battle of Franklin to the Civil War, these hallowed grounds witnessed pivotal moments in American history – and now allow visitors to take a step back in time.

As you can see, Franklin, TN is brimming with history. As a result, it is filled with beautiful, historic homes. But as beautiful as they are, historic homes require a little extra attention and care, especially when it comes to the fireplace – and we’re here to help.

How Do You Repair a Masonry Fireplace?

Let’s face it, chimneys really do take a beating. Between the unpredictably high winds, the sudden downpours, and the occasional freezing temperatures that Middle Tennessee sees, it is quite common to suddenly find your chimney in disrepair.

…but just because it’s common doesn’t mean it should be ignored.

Below are some of the signs to look for that will alert you to potential issues that require prompt attention from the chimney and fireplace experts.

  • Visible cracks or gaps
  • Crumbling mortar
  • Deteriorating or loose bricks
  • Water stains or leaks
  • Leaning or tilting chimney
  • White, flaky substance (efflorescence)
  • Damaged chimney crown

While any of the above might have you sweating while you consider what it will cost to repair a brick chimney, we would like to remind you that neglecting to make all necessary repairs will cause greater, more expensive damage down the line.

So what can be done about a damaged chimney? The methods we use are completely dependent upon the extent of damage you have incurred. After a thorough inspection, we can do any of the following:

  • Repointing: Repointing is the process of removing any existing damaged mortar and filling those joints with new mortar. This not only improves the appearance of the brick chimney, but also strengthens it.
  • Brick Replacement: Bricks that are deteriorating or crumbling need to be replaced with new bricks that match the existing size, color, and texture of your current brick.
  • Chimney Crown Repair: A chimney crown is a good line of defense against water intrusion – if it’s working properly, anyway. If there are any cracks present, we will apply a new layer of concrete or even a crown sealant to ensure no water can penetrate the brick or chimney.
  • Waterproofing: Applying a waterproofing sealant to the exterior of the chimney helps repel water, reduce the amount of moisture the bricks are naturally absorbing, and extend the life of the bricks and mortar.
  • Structural Reinforcement: Sometimes, in extreme cases, where a chimney is unstable or leaning, corrective action is needed to stabilize and strengthen the chimney’s structure to prevent eventual collapse.

Michael and Ryan of Ashbusters Chimney Service Inc. did an amazing job removing our gas fireplace and cleaning the area afterwards. They were highly effective in their removal, more so than we could have hoped for. They were in and out very quickly with the job done to perfection. At the end of it all, they even spared a few minutes to answer some questions we had about stone work. Both of them were very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. I highly recommend them for any and all chimney/fireplace needs! Thank you, Michael and Ryan! – David
